Props

Playing Cards (14 total, all in the same suit; suit is random):

  • Standard Bicycle Blue Backs (4 cards):
    • Two cards with value 2
    • Two cards with value 6
    • Note: One 2 and one 6 have a square of Cheap Trick–style strong/weak double-sided tape affixed to the center of the back.
  • Colored Backs (10 cards):
    • Values: A, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10
    • Each card has a different back color (one may be light blue, but not standard Bicycle blue)

Envelopes:

  • 1 × Regular envelope
  • 1 × Double-sided envelope (dual-pocket)

Setup

2-Packet (6 cards)

Arrange the following cards face down, in order from top to bottom, and place them into the regular envelope:

  1. 2 (Blue back) — with double-sided tape on back center
  2. 2 (Blue back)
  3. 5 (Colored back)
  4. 4 (Colored back)
  5. 3 (Colored back)
  6. 2 (Colored back)

6-Packet (6 cards)

Arrange the following cards face down, in order from top to bottom, and place them into one side of the double-sided envelope:

  1. 6 (Blue back) — with double-sided tape on back center
  2. 6 (Blue back)
  3. A (Colored back)
  4. 8 (Colored back)
  5. 7 (Colored back)
  6. 6 (Colored back)

Hidden Cards

Place the remaining cards:

  • 9 (Colored back)
  • 10 (Colored back)

into the other side of the double-sided envelope.

Keep this side facing the table or toward yourself, concealed from the audience at all times.

Handling Note:
When managing this side of the envelope, use the flap of the envelope to cover the indices. Only allow the corner pips (suit indicators) to remain visible—the numbers should never be exposed.


Performance

Phase 1 — 2-Packet

Remove the 2-Packet from the regular envelope.

Casually display the cards face down to show the blue backs, then turn the packet face up.

As you count, say:

“I have four 2s… one, two, three, four.”

During this line, perform a Modified Townsend Count:(see instructional video for full details)

  • Hold the packet in the right hand in dealing position.
  • With the left hand, take the bottom card and briefly show it face up and face down, establishing it as a blue-backed card.
  • Using the right thumb, push over all remaining cards as a block.
  • As the left hand takes this block, simultaneously return the displayed “2” to the bottom of the right-hand packet.

Continue the count naturally, maintaining the illusion of four 2s.

At this point, the top two cards (blue-backed 2s) are lightly adhered together.

Keep the packet face up and place it on the table at Position A.

The packet now contains 4 cards (top to bottom):
2, 3, 4, 5


Phase 2 — 6-Packet

Remove the 6-Packet from the double-sided envelope and turn it face up.

As you count, say:

“Here I have four 6s… one, two, three, four.”

Repeat the same handling to secretly adhere the top two cards (blue-backed 6s).

Then say:

“I’ll remove one card from each packet.”

  • Take the top face-up “6” (actually two adhered cards).
  • Casually flick it with your finger, reinforcing the adhesion under the guise of a natural gesture.
  • Toss it onto the table.

Place the remaining packet (face up) at Position B.

The packet now contains 4 cards (top to bottom):
6, 7, 8, A


Phase 3 — Combine Packets

Pick up the 2-Packet:

“And one from this packet as well.”

  • Take the top face-up “2” (two adhered cards).
  • Lightly press it with your fingers to ensure it stays aligned.
  • Place it on top of the previously tossed “6.”

Place the remaining 2-Packet (face up) onto Position B, directly on top of the 6-Packet.

You now have a combined packet of 8 face-up cards:

2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, A


Phase 4 — Load & Misdirection

Pick up the two tabled cards (actually two adhered pairs):

  • Place the 6 on top of the 2.
  • Insert them into the empty side of the double-sided envelope.

Handling detail:

  • As you insert the cards, use the edge of the envelope to conceal the indices (numbers).
  • Only allow the corner pips (suit indicators) to remain visible.

Turn the envelope over and place it on the table (the side containing the 9 and 10 is now facing up).

Ask:

“After removing two cards, how many are left?”

Spectator answers: “Six.”

Respond:

“2 and 6 are interesting numbers. Together they make 8… and somehow, the cards have gone back to eight.”


Phase 5 — Transformation

Say:

“Watch—when I give the packet a little shake…”

Gently shake the packet.

  • Secretly take the bottom card (A) and move it to the top.

Deal the cards onto the table one by one, saying:

“Ace, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight.”


Phase 6 — Final Reveal

Say:

“I removed two cards earlier. There are 8 here… plus those two makes 10.”

Remove the 9 and 10 from the envelope and place them on the table.

Immediately ditch the envelope (it now contains the gaffed blue-backed cards).

Finally say:

“One last question—do you remember what color the backs were?”

Have the spectator turn all 10 cards face down.

Reveal: all 10 cards have different colored backs.
